The UMF/Komi Exchange Program





From 1989 to 1992, under the leadership of UMF Academic Computing Consultant Dr.Alfred Bersbach, it sends eight Farmington people on two-week visits to Komi and hosts four Komi delegations totaling 19 people and including the Komi Interior Minister, other government and industry officials, and teachers. This leads to the UMF/Pedinstitute exchange program as well as an annual exchange of high-school delegations and a great deal of other activity.

1991    UMF President Dr.Michael Orenduff and Irina Mikhailova, Pedinstitute Senior Teacher and "Bridges for Peace" delegate, sign a student and Fuculty exchange agreement between the two ins1994 Spring   titutions.

1992 Jan    Emilia Pershina, Pedinstitute Dean of Foreign Languages, begins three semesters teaching Russian at UMF.
Fall    Lee Sharkey, Instructor of English, teaches American literature and close reading at the Pedinstitute. Al Bersbach teaches computer science and establishes an electronic mail link at the Pedinstitute. Al's son, Patrich Liddy attends school #14.

1993 Spring    Dr. Andrea Southard, Associate Professor of Theater, teaches theater and close reading, and directs a student production of "Our Town" at the Pedinstitute.
    Doug Dunlap leads a 15-member delegation of students and faculty to Syktyvkar for two weeks to study social welfare systems there.
Fall   Diana Shylyak, Head Teacher of the Pedinstitute English department, begins a year teaching Russian at UMF. Pedinstitute English students Anastasia Kovaleva and Sergei Rukavitsyn begin a year's study at UMF. UMF students Jody Baumgartner and Kiri Guyaz study Russian language and culture at the Pedinstitute.
    Fourteen Komi social welfare officials and workers visit UMF for two weeks to study area social systems. The delegation includes the Komi Minister of Social Protection as well as officials from hospitals and institutions across the Republic. Komi Minister of Education visits UMF as a member of this year's Komi delegation to Mount Blue High School.

1994 Spring    Rehabilitation students Debbie Ricker and Ted Marco intern at Syktyvkar hospitals.
    Vladimir Chermnykh, Candidate of Sciece and head of the Stratigraphy Division of the Komi Science Center, lectures in the Department of Natural Sciences and travels with UMF geology students and faculty to a conference of the Geological Society of America.
    Dr. Robert Pullo, Professor of Rehabilitation, leads the second social welfare delegation to Komi. Dr. Sue Huseman, UMF Interim President, travels with the delegation to meet with Pedinstitute faculty and administration as well as other Komi officials.
Summer   Rehabilitation student Stephen Church interns at a Syktuvkar hospital. Dr. Sylvie Witkin, Director of International Studies, makes a short visit at the Pedinstitute as do Lee Sharkey and Al Bersbach.
Fall   Robert Kimber, Instructor of English, and his wife Rita teach close reading and English conversation at the Pedinstitute. Students Aaron Gould and Elaine Arbour study Russian language and culture at the Pedinstityte. Vera Chernykh, Senior Teacher at the Pedinstitute English department, begins a year of Russian language teaching at UMF. Two Pedinstitute students begin a year of studies at UMF.
1995   Another delegation arrives from Syktyvkar, and hosted by faculty and staff at UMF.
1996   Diana Shulyak returning to UMF for another year as exchange professor.
Spring   The Pullo family travel to Syktyvkar where Robert and Melanie become exchange faculty for the Spring semester at the Pedinstitute.
Fall   Two physicians from Syktyvkar Hospitals visit Medical Facilities in Farmington, observing syrgical tecniques at Franclin Memorial Hospital.
1997   Irina Mikailova, Senior Teacher at the Pedinstitute, returns to Farmington for a year as exchange professor at UMF. Maria Kaneva comes as an exchange student for a year.
1998   Lynda Kinley, UMF Admissions ofice, becomes exchange faculty to the Pedinstitute.
