[Gretchen at McMurdo] Science in Antarctica

Antarctic Sea Life

These are pictures of sea creatures in McMurdo Sound, right off the edge of McMurdo Station. They were taken by divers Rob Robbins and Adam Marsh, as they collected sea stars and sea urchins.

This 18-foot-deep observation chamber was snug and cozy inside, out of the wind, quiet, deep blue, peaceful. I sat in it for an hour one day, watching jellyfish undulate past, and once my eyes adjusted, spying sea stars and sponges on the dark sea floor.

A fish like this one hovered at the window of the observation tube as I sat quietly, watching.
This is my favorite--clione antarctica, although I prefer to call then Ross Sea Music Fairies.
