Here are a couple pictures of the muddy roads of Mutni Materik. The red vehicle is a tough car which our hosts referred to as a "Russian jeep." We borrowed big boots to wear (everyone does when it’s muddy there), which we’d take off when we visited homes, going in socks or sometimes they loaned us ‘house slippers.’ As dirty as the village looks in the mud, the homes were for the most part very clean and comfortable, even if primitive and a bit run down. We saw the airport, which they put a lot of effort thirty years ago to make smooth for the regional plans (a field, not concrete), but now that the planes don’t come it’s rutted and a grazing area for horses.
