In old East Berlin the television tower was a proud achievement of the GDR.  The picture on the left shows it from the vantage point of the 'world clock' on Alexanderplatz.  On the right photo note the light streak that is on front.   When the sun hits it right there is a second streak (you can see it slightly at this angle) which crosses it to make it look in the distance like a crucifix.    The TV tower could be seen in the West, and from that distance it appeared to show a cross, something which irritated the Communists who opposed religion.   Berliners joked it was the "Pope's revenge."  Below is a view of the TV tower in night fog:
