Some views of the old Bundestag building in Bonn. In the background of the second photo is the old office building for Bundestag representatives. The building was rather modest, tucked away near the Rhein, requiring some effort to reach. The new Bundestag building, the Reichstag (click here to see it) is much more impressive. Some think that is symbolic: the not fully sovereign Bonn Republic was modest and understated, while the new Berlin Republic, a power in Europe, is regal and grand. I wouldn't read too much into that though, Germany has defied the fear mongers in the decade plus since unification and hasn't given up its focus on multilateralism and cooperation to build international law and organization. The fears of a "fourth Reich" have proven groundless.
