More scenes from the beautiful pedestrian zone of Tuebingen. I was in the city to visit the University of Tuebingen, which has one of the best International Relations libraries in the country, and is well known for its research on international studies. A friend of mine invited me to participate in a seminar for foreign students about the war in Afghanistan -- the theme was "Germany in war," and I discussed my research and compared German and American reactions. In general, Germans I think are less ready to embrace emotional patriotism over something like this, and is more concerned about the moral implications of war, including civilian casulties, the morality of weapons like cluster bombs, and the complexities of international relations. Germany's attitude comes from painful historical lessons, and I personally think Americans are often a bit cavalier about the moral implications of war. The talk was interesting, as they had students from all over the world, including (surprisingly) two from one -- one from Skowhegan, and one from near Lewiston! I had a productive time researching, talked with German political scientists, and had a fun time in the seminar.
