In the late eighties West Germany decided to rebuild its Bundestag building in Bonn, and for awhile the representatives met in the building in the picture on the left. Ironically, the new Bundestag opened just about the time that the decision was made to move the capital to Berlin! The statue above is of Konrad Adenauer, "der Alte." He was West Germany's first Chancellor, and steered the new state towards integration with the West -- a Westpolitik that included European integration and cooperation with the US through NATO.
