Above is a church on the left, and a typical city street in Heidelberg on the right.   Heidelberg is a beautiful little town in Germany, housing a university and an impressive castle.  There is also an American military base near by, and hence Heidelberg has become very famous to Americans, often one of the first places Americans visit when going to Germany (it helps that it is located near Frankfurt as well).  I had never been to Heidelberg before November 2001, except on trains passing through.   I was almost proud of the fact that although I had been to every one of the 16 German states and most cities, I hadn't been to a place associated with American tourists.   When I arrived for my research trip this year, however, I needed something to keep me awake (I arrived at 7:00 AM German time, but 1:00 AM American time, you want to sleep when you arrive.  The best way to avoid jet lag is to force yourself to remain wide awake and active until about 9:00 PM in Germany, the equivalent of staying up all night in the US and then until 3:00 in the afternoon the next day!  If you can do that you sleep like a baby until the next morning and feel perfect when you wake up).  I decided to head to Heidelberg and walk around.  It worked, I stayed awake until early evening and felt as good as new the next day!
