A pretty little town of Dormagen, on the Rhein.  Some friends of ours who live in Neuss, in between the major cities Cologne and Duesseldorf, took us here, telling us that in summer the little town is full of tourists.  We could see restaurants, cafes, and cobblestone narrow streets leading up to the Rhein river.  But on a cool November afternoon the town was pretty dead.  We did stop to get coffee.  Coffee is a treat in Europe.  They make it stronger than in the US.  Germany and France have similar coffees, strong, most likely mixed with cream and sugar.  The best coffee is in Turkey and Greece, though you have to get used to the grounds at the bottom of the cup.   Italy comes in second, NOTHING beats a good espresso, in my opinion...well, maybe the Melange in Vienna.  That is up there too, I recall staying wide awake in Vienna thanks to all the coffee I drank.  Coffee time in Germany (like tea time in Great Britain) is often observed on weekends with some cakes and coffee or tea, late afternoon.   If you're traveling and want to experience this, go to a Konditerei in Germany or Austria, choose one of the delicious cake (Kuchen) possibilities and order a Kaennchen coffee.  It's about two and a half cups, they bring it to you in a little container.   Then sit, chat, and enjoy!
