  • Make a frequency distribution table (include frequency, relative frequency, and cumulative frequency) for the data in Example 3.17 on page 67. Your class intervals should be: 0 to < 10, 10 to < 20, 20 to < 30, 30 to < 40, 40 to < 70. Then, consult these instructions and use Excel to make a histogram using these class intervals. (Print this histogram out.) Explain what is wrong with this histogram and make a correct histogram by hand.

  • Make a list of 10 numbers (each number must be a 1, 2, or 3) where the range and interquartile range are equal. Describe ALL possible answers.
  • Use your calculator to compute the IQR for the cancer data on page 89. (Use the 1-VarStat command.)
  • Consult these instructions and use Excel to make a histogram of the data at the top of page 64. Use the class intervals 3 to < 6, 6 to < 8, 8 to < 10, 10 to < 12, 12 to < 15, 15 to < 21.Explain what is wrong with this histogram and make a correct histogram by hand. Print out your Excel histogram and include it with the homework.

  • Problem #1: At what percentile is Q1 if your data set has 105 points?
  • Problem #2: If you data set has 2(2m)+1 data points (for some m>0), at what percentile is Q1?
  • Problem #3: Make up a data set of 20 numbers that has exactly two lower outliers and one upper outlier (according to the 1.5IQR criterion). Draw a boxplot for this data.
  • Problem #4: Using the approximation of standard deviation from class, approximate the standard deviation for the data in problem 4.22 on page 109.

  • Do #19, 21, 22 (also approximate the standard deviation as we did in class) on page 109.
  • Problem #5: Use your calculator to compute the standard deviation for the data in Example 4.10 on page 110. What is the standard deviation if we treat this data as a sample? What is the standard deviation if we treat this data as a population? By what factor do these two answers differ? (i.e. What is the exact number that you have to multiply the sample standard deviation by to get the population standard deviation?)
  • Problem #6: Order the 5 Statistics class (from the handout in class) from most variability to least variability if variablility is measured by IQR. What if variability is measured by range?
  • Make sure that you can use your calculator to find the standard deviation of both a population and a sample.
