COSTA RICA
Each January he leads (with Drew Barton, a tree ecologist) a student group to Costa Rica for two weeks. They work on environmental writing and scientific analysis of the wet rainforest of the Caribbean coast, the cloud forest of the central mountains and the dry rainforest of the Pacific coast.
Many of the poems in Birdwatching in Wartime arise from Thomson's experience in the rainforests of the American neotropics (Costa Rica and Peru in particular).
Birdwatching in Wartime won the 2010 Maine Book Award from the Maine Writers and Publishers Association.
And Jeff was awarded a Trustee Research Fellowship from the University fo Maine System for 2010-11 to finish his collection of essays: Landscape with Human Figure: Essays on Poetry and Place.
