INFORMATION FOR RETURNING STUDENTS WITH LANGUAGE ARTS LITERATURE CONCENTRATIONS (ELE and SED)

Requirements.  Requirements for returning students with Language Arts/Literature concentrations will remain the same. The requirements are:  EDR 303/Literature for Children, five other literature courses (including one in British, one in American, and one seminar), and then four English courses (which might be creative writing and/or linguistics as well as literature), for a total of ten courses.

“ Lit Majors.”  Wherever the phrase “lit majors” or “majors” appears in the course booklet or the catalog, ELE and SED students with Language Arts/Literature concentrations are included.

ENG 181.  Although it will not be required, students who are sophomores in 1999-2000 and who are prepared to declare a literature concentration should consider enrolling in ENG 181/Literary Analysis and Interpretation if they can fit it in. This course will provide extremely valuable preparation for further study in literature.  Please note, however, that the Registrar will not permit students to enroll unless they have officially declared their concentrations.

Seminar.  To meet the seminar requirement, returning students will now have to take ENG 402/Senior Seminar in Literature.  The new 300-level literature courses are not seminars.  However, they are advanced courses, and, beginning in fall, 1999, students with Language Arts/Literature concentrations may substitute two 300-level courses for the senior seminar.   Students who choose this option will have to fill out course equivalency forms, but these will automatically be approved by the Department Chair.

British Literature.  Students who have not yet taken a course in British literature will now have a de facto requirement of either ENG 249/British Texts and Contexts or ENG 250/ Shakespeare, since these will be the only British courses which do not require previous study in British literature.  Once students take one of these courses, they will be free to elect any of the 300-level courses in British literature in later semesters.

If you have any questions about the new curriculum or about the requirements of the concentration, please contact Pat O’Donnell (ext. 7419) or Dan Gunn (ext. 7422).
