INFORMATION FOR NON-MAJORS
With the fall, 1999, schedule, faculty in English and American literature will begin offering the revised literature curriculum approved by the Curriculum Committee in December, 1998. Although much of the curriculum remains unchanged, advisors should be aware of the following:
- ENG 181/Literary Analysis and Interpretation is open to students with declared literature or CWR majors only. This is an introductory course designed to prepare students for further study in literature; it is not a general education course.
- The appropriate courses for students seeking to satisfy a general education requirement in the humanities are 200-level literature courses. Of these courses, two--ENG 249/British Texts and Contexts and ENG 270/Survey of Early American Literature--are basic sophomore-level courses which serve as prerequisites for many advanced courses and which will be required of majors entering fall, 1999, and later. Interested general education students are welcome in these courses, but they will be oriented toward the concerns of majors. All other 200-level literature courses are designed to be appropriate for both majors and non-majors; for many students, these will be the best option for satisfying a general education requirement in the humanities.
- Literature courses at the 300-level and the 400-level require previous college-level study in literature, as detailed in the prerequisites. They are thus not appropriate for students who wish to take a single literature course to satisfy a general education requirement. Students who enroll in these courses without the listed prerequisites will be asked to select another course on the first day of class.
Course descriptions for new and revised courses are available in the 1999-2000 catalog. If you have questions about any aspect of the new literature curriculum, contact Pat O’Donnell (ext. 7419) or Dan Gunn (ext. 7422).Back to Lit Curriculum Index
