REH 270 CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND THE TRANSITION PROCESS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
An overview course which introduces the student to the process of
transitioning individuals through lifelong career development, both in the educational and service delivery systems. Emphasis includes theory and philosophy in special education and rehabilitation relating to service to persons with vocationally handicapping factors. Strategies for vocational assessment, planning, education, counseling and adjustment are considered.COURSE OBJECTIVES
1.
To understand the basic concepts of career development, transitioning and the transition process, the educator and service providers's roles within the process;2.
Understanding the common issues related to working with special populations such as: persons with mental retardation, learning disability, physical disability and mental illness, injured or displaced workers, mid-life career changes, and the retiring worker;3.
Analysis of educational, community and work environments to determine the skills and attributes necessary for persons to make successful life transitions;4.
Focus on understanding work, preparation for work, and a variety of variables associated with developing and maintaining a satisfying career;5.
Special issues such as gender, age, and ethnic discrimination as they apply to career development will be emphasized;6. Review of resources and methods for teaching career education and
transitioning strategies to individuals in primary, secondary school and other settings to facilitate positive vocational development, work adjustment and vocational placement.COURSE READINGS

* All assignments must be typed, double-spaced. Grammar, spelling and overall clarity and polish are considerations in evaluation.
* Late assignments will be subject to grade reduction.
* All assigned readings, including articles on reserve, should be completed prior to topic discussion.
* Unexcused absences will result in reduction in final grade.
